This is a part of my recent trip with the girls to Louisiana and parts of Mississippi. I visited the Longwood Plantation over 10 years ago and I have always wanted to go back... its like going back in time, and experiencing history. Its unlike any other home of its time, because only the exterior and basement floor was completed prior to the Civil War, as it was built by slaves on the plantation. During the Civil War the owner went bankrupt as he lost all his 'property' due to the freeing of the slaves. He also died, leaving the unfinished house to his wife and children. The homes interior was never completed, though it still contains personal items and furnishings of the original owners.
When news of the war came, tools that were left behind were merely sat down as the men went off to war, as if they would come back in a few days time to finish the work. The ornate windows were never fitted with glass but merely boareded up to protect the interior. All later contracts on the home stipulated that the home would not be finished. It was a lesson to realize that many worldly things were lost with the war... but much more was gained... in the way of freedom.
